Nutrition in Animals

  • Animals are heterotrophs (विषमपोषणजों) which are dependent of others for food.
Animals obtain food from Plants (पौधे) and Animals (जानवरों)
  • We [human being] are also animals.
  • We obtain food from plants such as wheat (गेहूँ), rice, fruits, pulses (दाल) and vegetables.
  • We also obtain food from animals (जानवरों) such as milk, egg, etc.
  • Non-green plants (गैर-हरे पौधे) also obtain food from plants and animals.
  • Example:-Yeast plants.
  • Some plants can eat insects (कीड़े):- such as the Pitcher plant and Venus fly-trap.

Animals can be divide into three groups (समूहों) on the basis of their food habits (आदतों).

a) Herbivores

b) Carnivores

c) Omnivores

Herbivores

  •  Those animals which eat only plants, are known as (शाकाहारी) herbivores.
  • Example:- Cow, Sheep, Horse, Deer, Goat, Monkey, Elephant, Camel, Grasshopper, Rabbit, Hippopotamus.

Carnivores

  •  Those animals which only eat animals are called (मांसाहारी) Carnivores.
  • Example:- Frog, Lion, Snake, Lizard, Tiger, Vulture, etc.
  • Carnivores are only meat eaters.

Omnivores

  •  Those animals which eat both plants and animals are called (सर्वाहारी) Omnivores.
  • Example:- Crow, Dog, Man, Ants, Bear, etc.
  • Omnivores (सर्वाहारी) are both plants and animals eaters.

Steps in the process of (पशुओं में पोषण) Nutrition in Animals

There are five steps in the process of (पशुओं में पोषण) Nutrition in Animals.

This are:-

  •             Ingestion
  •             Digestion
  •             Absorption
  •             Assimilation
  •             Egestion

Ingestion
  • The process of taking of food (भोजन ग्रहण करने की प्रक्रिया) into the body is called Ingestion.

Digestion

  • The process in which the food containing large, insoluble molecules (अघुलनशील अणु) is broken down into small, water soluble molecules (पानी में घुलनशील अणु) is called Digestion.

Absorption

  • The process in which digested food passes through the intestinal wall (आंतों की दीवार) into blood stream is called Absorption.

Assimilation

  • The process in which the absorbed food (अवशोषित भोजन) is taken in by body cells and used for energy, growth and repair, is called Assimilation.

Egestion

  • The process in which the undigested food (अपचित भोजन) is removes from the body is called Egestion.

Nutrition in simple animals

  • Two very simple animals are Amoeba (अमीबा) and Paramecium (पैरामिसियम).
  • They consists of single cells (एकल कोशिका). They are called as (एककोशिकीय जानवर) unicellular animals.
  • In unicellular animals (एककोशिकीय जानवर), all the processes of nutrition (पोषण) are performed by single cell.
